Departmental Activities - Legal Metrology

To ensure accuracy of weighing & measuring instruments, which are used in commercial transactions and protection, in the hierarchy of standards established by the Central Government as per the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, by verifying and stamping them at prescribed periodical intervals.

To initiate punitive action against dealers/persons/users found guilty of
- Using non-standard units of weights/measures or numbers,
- Using unverified weights & measures,
- Delivering or buying quantities shorter or in excess of what was contracted or paid for,
- Violating the prescribed declarations on pre-packaged commodities,
- Selling less than the declared quantity in pre-packed packages,
- Any other violation of the Act or Rules.

To settle the offences by compounding, or to submit the case before the court of law in cases that are either non-compoundable or have not been compounded.

To educate poor and economically weak consumers about their rights regarding weight and measurement.
