Legal Metrology Overview

Measurement and weighing devices are widely used by citizens for the purchase and sale of necessities of life. Therefore, enforcement of the accuracy of Weights & Measures and those of the packaged commodities in the market is an indispensable activity of the Government in a welfare state. For this purpose, the Legal Metrology Division of the Consumer Affairs Department works under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and takes responsibility for protecting the interests of customers.

Earlier this cell was working under the Department of Industries, but in accordance with the budget announcements for the year 2015–16, the Legal Metrology Cell was brought under the Department of Consumer Affairs with effect from 01.10.2016.
